Relearning how to read
I am beginning to be a reader, and it is hard work! Previously, all of my reading took place in the context of school. I went through a great books program, which I loved! I reveled in reading the ten books a week for my classes, and I thought that made me a good reader. Now that I've graduated, though, I realize that I'm not. I have a hard time finishing a book. I have a hard time starting a book. If I'm not captivated by the story right away, there's very little chance that I'll dedicate the time to read it. Not to mention works of theology or prose; I'll enjoy those for a few pages and then retire them.
...What happened to me?!
Well, I've decided to be more intentional about reading. I want to enjoy it and be good at it. It's just taking me a while to adjust my reading habits to my new post-graduation life style. So, I started with a book I know I'll enjoy: Pride and Prejudice.
Now the trick is to find the time to read a book I already want to read. Having a husband that I love dearly makes this a bit difficult. We're not real independent in our relationship. We tend to do everything together, so my only alone time is when he's gone and I'm home. That doesn't happen often enough to foster a good reading habit. So, he's reluctantly agreed to give me some time (though I can tell he doesn't like when I'm in the other room). Also, I set my alarm this morning to wake up and read! My husband likes to sleep in pretty late, so I take advantage of the mornings to have my own time.
Hello, Mr. Darcy!
(Random after thought: that book in the picture is actually Gilead, another recent reading attempt that may have fizzled out despite my deep resonance with the writing...)
